One of the most difficult situations in the use of a satellite phone is the need to charge the battery at times when no AC power supply is available. Thuraya already had available a car charger that allows charging through a vehicle battery. In addition, two models of solar panels are available to charge the battery. Thuraya has now announced a third option: the Thuraya solar battery.
The rechargeable Li-lon solar battery works on the Hughes 7100 and 7101 models as well as the earlier ASCOM MODELS. The high efficiency solar cells charge the battery in one day of direct sunlight. The unit has a DC jack port for external rapid charging in less than 90 minutes using Thuraya chargers. A bright white LED will turn on when solar panel is touched by sunlight and also doubles as a low battery indicator.
The battery is made with real satellite solar panels technology (excess solar panels actually) and is assembled in the USA.
